PUSH REEL MOWERS

Push Reel Mowers are quiet, inexpensive, and nonpolluting, since pushing them turns the wheels and a series of curved blades without an engine. They're also relatively safe and require little upkeep beyond blade adjustments and sharpening. But swaths are only 14 to 18 inches wide, cutting tends to be relatively uneven, and most can't cut grass higher than 11/2 inches or trim closer than 3 inches around obstacles. Price: $100 to about $400.

ELECTRIC MOWERS

Best for small, flat lawns. All offer push-button starting and quieter running, create no exhaust emissions, and require no tune-ups. Electric Corded mowers weigh less than gas and

Cordless models. They’re less capable than gas mowers and aren’t self-propelled. Hover Mowers are another exciting choice in this style. Price range $200 to $600 for corded mowers.

BATTERY CORDLESS MOWERS

Best for small, flat lawns. All offer push-button starting and quieter running, create no exhaust emissions, and require no tune-ups. They’re less capable than gas mowers and aren’t self-propelled.

Battery Cordless models also limit run time per battery charge. Price range $300 to $750 for cordless models.

ROBOTIC LAWN MOWERS

Best for small, flat lawns. All offer push-button starting and quieter running, create no exhaust emissions, and require no tune-ups. They’re less capable than gas mowers and aren’t self-propelled.

Robotic Cordless models also limit run time per battery charge. Price range $300 to $750 for cordless models.

RIDING LAWN MOWERS

Best for lawns one-half acre or more. Most mow a swath 42 to 48 inches wide and accept snow throwers and other tools. Some

Riding Models offer tighter turning. But you’ll need a 4x6-foot storage space. Tighter turning costs extra. Snow throwers and other add-ons tend to be pricey and hard to install and remove. Price range $1,000 to

$2,800; $2,700 to $3,500 for models with tight turning.

BATTERY AND PROPANE POWERED GRASS TRIMMERS

The latest models of string trimmers address both lawn-grooming issues with more performance and convenience with less pollution with powerful Propane Powered and lithium and NiCad battery powered. We compare string trimmer types to help you to decide whether propane powered, corded, or cordless is best for your needs. Recharging times have been reduced with lithium batteries and offer the convenience of Cordless Trimming. Priced from $150 to $400 dollars for a system.
